What is Project Cool Breeze?
In 1999, City of Charleston councilman Wendell Gilliard began a project to provide new fans and air conditioners to elderly persons, 60 years or older, in the tri-county area in response to a number of heat-related deaths.
With the growing number of seniors, particularly those on low-fixed incomes, it is more important than ever that the community and local businesses support Project Cool Breeze.
Donations can be made at any time during the year, but the greatest need is from May to September. During this time, air conditioners and fans are distributed to elderly persons in need.

On Thursday, January 28, 2010, Chapter President, Jayne Carswell, CSP and Michele McCutchen, CSP participated in the 2nd Annual Career/College Fair at Norman C. Toole Military Magnet Academy located in North Charleston. The school's mission is to prepare cadets to become academically competent, disciplined, and responsible citizens as well as to build leadership characteristics. The academy serves over 500 students from the entire Charleston County School District in grades 6-12.

The Low Country Chapter conducted a PPE drive to benefit our local Habitat for Humanity. Pat Rhea, CSP, our Chapter's 2nd Vice President, coordinated the drive, which turned out to be a huge success! Several boxes of safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, Tyvek suits, etc. were presented to Dan Jones of Habitat for Humanity at the January 2010 meeting.

This year's Toys for Tots Drive was a huge success! The Chapter collected bicycle helmets and many other toys that were presented to Marines representing Toys for Tots at the November 17, 2009 meeting. Rob Fowler of WCBD-TV was also there to record some footage that was shown on the evening news. Thanks to all those who contributed!

The ASSE Low Country Chapter's Annual Safety, Health & Environmental Conference was another great success! Many thanks to Ms. Jayne Carswell for coordinating such a wonderful event and to the entire Planning Committee for their hard work and attention to detail! We believe we set Chapter records regarding the number of attendees AND vendors. If you were there, I'm sure that you'll agree that it was well worth the time and effort. As a reminder, this conference is our Chapter's main fundraising event for the year, so your support is vital. We have many activities and initiatives that require financial support, so your participation was very much appreciated!
Thank you for your continued support!
Michele P. McCutchen,
President, ASSE Low Country Chapter
